Hello all,
I said yes to Chris Crosby’s invitation to do an 1 1/2 hr. gig for two reasons: First, to help LIOS financially. Second, and far, far more important, for me to have a deadline to get ideas out of my head that have been writing themselves for decades. You see, I had a PhD and a position on the faculty of Whitworth college that enabled an accredited, very conservative institution to offer an off-the-wall, norm-breaking MA degree that was based on the T group.
Following Bob Crosby’s lead we created a very nontraditional graduate program. We had residential weekend modules rather than classes. We measured competence rather than gave grades. This experiential competency-based platform launched me into the most creative and satisfying professional experience of my life.
Helping others learn how to change their interactions changed me. Today I find myself thinking and acting in ways that I never would have without all those T group years.
The Presentation
I will not focus on the program, the T group, or how we measured competence of the students. Rather, I will share a few ideas and models developed during those years that I continue to use to influence me. My hope is that you will find them understandable and applicable.
Join us February 9, 2023 starting at 6:00 pm PST. The event is 90 minutes long.
Ronald R. Short, Ph.D. has an MA and PhD in psychology from Claremont Graduate University. He was professor of psychology at Whitworth University when he teamed with Bob Crosby and John Scherer in 1973 to create the Leadership Institute of Spokane/Seattle, an innovative competency– based MA ABS (Masters in Applied Behavioral Science) using the T group as the primary curriculum.
He experienced his first T group in the 1960s and became an intern with the National Training Laboratories in 1973, which included serving on an NTL staff led by John Wallen on two occasions. Then, with John Runyan, he co-founded Learning in Action Technologies using the models and methods learned in the MA program to work with several clients including AT&T Bell Laboratories, BC Telephone, US West Telephone, Shell oil.
You will learn why this is relevant in his talk. In 1962 he was in his first year as a graduate student and on call as a Navy pilot during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
